Under Pressure
This week has mainly consisted of burning the candle and both ends as we prepared a complex ceiling mount for the Holophane project (more shortly as we collate the pictures, words and emotions around this, on the surface, "simple" project).Having said that one thing we're always doing is sourcing, we keep our eyes on a number of key sources, searching for the strange, unusual and/or just plain unique. This week we located the ideal "icing on the cake" for the warm welcome project.

TelCo Revisited
Last week in Seven Days: Eighteen Ten Fifteen we wrote about the magic of tellurium copper - a special alloy of copper that is supposedly much better to machine due to the addition of the magic tellurium. This week we finally had an opportunity to try machining this wunderstuff - we're very impressed! It machines very nicely, is not troublesome from a feed/speed point of view and more importantly it finishes beautifully. You'll see the full results shortly where the part below forms part of a more complex component.
TeCu - all the rumours were true; excellent machinability, lovely finish |
Arresting Fall?
Question: How do you hang 30kg from the ceiling, do it safely, not pull the ceiling down and make sure that if the unthinkable happens and the mounting has a catastrophic failure you don't end up with a flat cat?Answer: You spend a lot of time designing a secure mounting and then you incorporate some kind of fail safe system. In our case we needed to do this but keep it concealed - the industrial thing is cool but we all have our limits and a bit of crusty chain would never do.
We'll show how we concealed the safety wire but the quick summary is we used some very nice quality stainless steel wire and fittings from a marine chandlery supplier. It's this kind of detail which we believe differentiates us from others; we'll spend a lot of time thinking through the challenges so you don't end up with either a potentially risky installation or with "details" added that are clear afterthoughts (nice way of saying bodge!).
Details, details - fall arresting! |
This Week's Obsession
Tom Raffield's "The Scots Light" - we could pick many things from Master Raffield's site but as we've all got an obsession with lighting so this week we have been imagining where we could specify this fabulous item. (we'd love to talk ceiling roses/mountings with him as well to share some of our ideas!)

- Seven Days? You What? I mean, pardon?
- These posts give us a chance to recap on the last week at Bokoshoko and give you a glimpse of what's happening. Many of our projects take time to come to fruition or our customers would prefer we did not share so these posts also show we're not just sitting around!
